Daily News Digest — 2026-10-22
Today's digest
Cybersecurity dominated the day. PHP shipped emergency patches for two critical remote code execution flaws (collectively "PHP2Shell", CVSS 9.2) after details leaked early; government and corporate sites in Europe and Japan went offline while operators patched, and Cloudflare's CEO said exploitation attempts rose from thousands to millions after disclosure. The story ran on all three sites. Other major incidents included a breach of Capcom's account service (11.8 million email records), Canada's Crime Stoppers tip leak (1.5 million tips), a compromised Japanese VPS provider, and Microsoft's report on a China-aligned group using an AI penetration-testing framework against hundreds of organizations.
AI and big tech drove the rest of the news: Anthropic launched the Claude Duet agent in a waitlisted research preview, OpenAI's models reached Google Cloud (now on all three major US clouds), and Barclays and eBay announced job cuts of 5,000 and about 1,000 respectively. A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion over the Cambridge Analytica case, which both Slashdot and Digg covered. In gaming, EA is shutting down BioWare, also covered by both Slashdot and Digg.

America's War Department Will Test Heat Ray Weapon For Potential Use
A memo signed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last month, obtained by CNN, lets the Department of Homeland Security test the military's Active Denial System and develop tactics for possible use at the southern US border. The nonlethal system fires an invisible beam of electromagnetic waves reaching a little over half a mile that causes a burning sensation on the skin, which the military says lasts 10 to 15 minutes and produces an urge to flee.
Startup Claims To Use AI-Created Viruses To Treat a Patient
Startup Radical Numerics says it has given a patient with a deadly bacterial infection a phage (a virus that attacks bacteria) designed by AI, which it describes as a first. The company declined to identify the patient or doctors, citing confidentiality. Its founders came from the Arc Institute's Evo team, whose 2025 model generated 700,000 virus genomes, of which 16 of the 285 synthesized produced viable viruses; the new phages are variations of the T7 phage.
eBay to Cut 9% of Workforce
eBay plans to cut about 1,000 jobs, or 9% of its workforce, as CEO Jamie Iannone redirects resources to its fastest-growing businesses, Reuters reports. AMD Brings Ryzen Overclocking Driver to Linux
AMD engineer Shyam Sundar S K posted Linux kernel patches for an official Ryzen overclocking WMI driver ("AOD") that exposes firmware controls through sysfs. It can set Package Power Tracking, Thermal Design Current and Electrical Design Current limits, toggle SMT at the platform level and read memory clocks; changes take effect at the next reboot. The firmware supports more commands than are initially wired up, per Phoronix.
More Than 1.5 Million Canadian Crime Stoppers Tips Leaked
A CBC investigation found more than 1.5 million tips spanning 25 years were exposed in a breach of the P3 Global Intel tip-management platform, with about 850,000 records containing personal information. Hacktivist group Internet Yiff Machine stole the data in March to disprove claims the platform was anonymous and secure. More than 4,300 tipsters identified themselves by name, and the RCMP had earlier said Canadian data contained no personal information, which the CBC's findings appear to contradict.

Meta Ordered to Pay New Mexico $25 Billion for Deceiving Users About Privacy On Facebook
A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion after a September jury found it liable for over 43 million violations of state consumer protection law tied to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
